Most iPhone users have the YouTube app installed on their device — not only because it’s a convenient way to watch online videos, but also because it offers access to both entertainment and subject matter that we enjoy.
Despite the positives above, the YouTube app often leaves a lot to be desired among users. For example, there are limitations imposed on video downloads, background playback, and other handy features that would otherwise transform the user experience for the better.
iOS developer MiRO92 recognized the impact of these limitations on YouTube app users, and as such, a new and free jailbreak tweak dubbed uYou was born.
In as few words as possible, uYou could be described as a download manager for the official YouTube app, but it’s worth noting that it enables so much more for end users than merely download functionality.
The downloading functionality is particularly useful because users can save videos in any quality they want or choose to download the audio only. Downloaded stuff can then be exported to the Camera Roll or to other apps on the device to be viewed or listened to later on without an internet connection.
In addition to video downloads, uYou also introduces a convenient new mini player, enables background video playback without the need to subscribe to a YouTube Premium subscription, and implements scrubbing functionality in Control Center’s Now Playing widget when listening to a YouTube video in the background.
uYou adds a list of options to the YouTube app that can be accessed from the uYou glyph in the YouTube app:
Once accessed, options here include:
- Toggling background playback on or off on demand
- Enabling or disabling the Cast button
- Enabling or disabling HD when connected to cellular data
- Disabling YouTube’s age restrictions
- Clearing all downloads
It should be noted that uYou is intended to be used only with the official YouTube app, and not with third party YouTube clients. That said, the tweak does support all jailbroken devices running iOS 13 and later.
As with all tweaks the circumvent YouTube’s restrictions, we have to put out the disclaimer that the tweak should not be used for unlawful purposes such as piracy. Anything you do with the tweak is your personal responsibility.
If you’d like to give the new uYou tweak a try, then you can download it for free from MiRO92’s personal repository via your preferred package manager. If you’re not already taking advantage of MiRO92’s repository, then you can add it to your package manager of choice via the following URL:
